My name is Mckayla…
…and I’m running to represent Maryland’s 5th Congressional District. We deserve a representative who will fight for environmental, economic, and racial justice. Ever since I was incarcerated as a child for missing class while dealing with grief, I have been fighting for change.
In 2020, I ran a grassroots primary campaign and received more votes than any Democratic challenger in 40 years. Since then, I co-founded the youth-led advocacy organization Schools Not Jails to ensure no one experiences the school-to-prison pipeline like I did. Now, I’m running for Congress again – because Change Can’t Wait.

Medicare for All
The Covid-19 pandemic has confirmed what most working class and poor Americans already knew: our healthcare system is broken. Let's build a system organized around human wellbeing — not for private profit. Medicare for All is borne of a simple moral conviction: when you go to the doctor, it should be free.
Achieve Transformative Justice
As a formerly incarcerated person, Mckayla knows that our criminal punishment system is failing our communities. Let's stop funding the prison industrial complex and redirect resources toward public services. Let's disarm and demilitarize the police, protecting society's most vulnerable from a punitive and unaccountable system of law enforcement.
Green New Deal
The climate crisis is an existential threat to communities across Southern Maryland. A Green New Deal will deliver a just transition for workers and frontline communities, put people to work cleaning our Chesapeake Bay, repair the historical harms of environmental racism, and guarantee a livable planet for generations to come.
Save Our Schools
American public education is under attack. Budget cuts have left our teachers underpaid and our schools crumbling; tuition hikes leave millions struggling under student debt. Education can’t be the great equalizer when educational outcomes are tied to a child's zip code. We must raise teacher salaries, rebuild schools, forgive student debt, and equalize education funding.
Expand the Child Tax Credit
For one year, the expanded Child Tax Credit cut child poverty in half. Then it ended – and half of the families that previously received it now are unable to pay for food. Child poverty is a simply unacceptable policy choice. The expanded Child Tax Credit ensures that families are able to afford the basic necessities for this children.
Homes for All
In Maryland's 5th district and across the country, we face a massive shortage of truly affordable housing. The fact that homelessness exists at all in the richest country on earth is a national disgrace. Mckayla supports placing a cap on rent increases, building 12 million new units of social housing, and putting an end to exclusionary zoning practices.
